Reflective Growth: SMART Goals and Ideation Insights

Introduction
Week 5 was all about reflecting on my journey so far, setting SMART goals, and diving into the rapid ideation challenge.
Reflecting on my career, I realized the importance of a growth mindset, which my mentor often emphasized. This mindset thrives on challenges, pushing us to go beyond our limits. Week 5’s reflections highlighted how a growth mindset and reflections are interconnected. We can only develop a growth mindset by reflecting on our challenges and obstacles, empowering us to grow in the long run.
I found Kostange’s article on reflective writing particularly enlightening. It discusses how reflective writing can cultivate a growth mindset, aiding in daily planning and improvement.(Korstange, 2016
The Process of Ideation
Dispositional domain: Reflecting on discipline, time management, motivation, and general behavior.
Affective domain: Focusing on emotional intelligence, empathy, and external factors influencing my work.
Interpersonal domain: Evaluating verbal and non-verbal communication, listening, negotiating, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
Cognitive domain: Measuring strengths, mindset, aspirations, approach to learning, and career path.
Procedural domain: Assessing existing skills and identifying areas for improvement.
In the challenge activity, I rated myself as follow:
I identified the interpersonal domain as needing improvement, as I haven’t been as interactive with my peers as I’d like. I value their feedback and perspectives, but I realize I need to engage more. I also see myself as an empathetic person, particularly in design decisions, where I focus on understanding user pain points. This aligns with my strong focus on the procedural domain, where I regularly assess and improve my skills.
How to ideate?
Enhancing research skills: For my pursuit of this master’s degree in UX design, I aim to enhance my research skills by conducting in-depth research on two emerging trends in the field. Specifically, I plan to explore their impact on user behavior and interface design, compiling a comprehensive report with at least 10 reputable sources for each trend. To achieve this, I will allocate 5 hours per week for research, utilizing university resources and online databases. This goal is relevant to my academic and professional growth, as it will improve my knowledge of current UX design trends and enhance my design decision-making skills. I aim to complete this research and report by the end of the current semester, ensuring a timely and thorough exploration of the chosen trends.
Improving time management: Additionally, I recognize the importance of effective time management in balancing coursework, research, and personal activities. To improve in this area, I plan to implement a time management system that includes using a digital calendar and task manager to plan each week in advance. I will allocate specific time blocks for different activities, ensuring that I dedicate sufficient time to my academic responsibilities while also allowing for personal time. To achieve this goal, I will attend a workshop or seminar on time management techniques to learn effective strategies. This goal is relevant to my overall success in the master’s program, as it will help me improve productivity, reduce stress, and maintain a healthy work-life balance. I aim to implement this time management system starting from next week and will review its effectiveness after one month to make any necessary adjustments.
